Working for public radio gave me a few brushes with fame. The great political commentator and writer Cokie Roberts was one of them.
Challenge: Capture a compelling image of NPR legend Cokie Roberts during a live fundraising event — a moment that would reflect her warmth, intelligence, and connection with the audience.
As Spokane Public Radio’s official photographer and communications lead for the event, I documented the evening from start to finish. Cokie spoke about the women of Washington, D.C. during the post–Civil War era, drawing from her book Capital Dames. The evening began with a musical performance by local artist Ann Fennessy, culminating in a spontaneous sing-along where Cokie joined in with the audience — a moment of genuine joy and connection.
Cokie Roberts was a personal hero of mine. Her ability to provide historical context with grace and clarity — especially during her “Ask Cokie” segments — was unmatched. Capturing her smile in that moment felt like preserving a piece of her spirit. I’m grateful to have played a role in honoring her legacy and sharing her presence with our community.
